For those who wish to have PROP guns, BLANK guns or BLANKED firearms for their production, you must first hire, bribe or intern a Firearms Safety Coordinator. An FSC is the person who will oversee all aspects of the production where guns are utilized. At no time do we recommend that you bring on your cousin George to function as your production's FSC, simply because he held a gun once or has a pistol license. Years of experience involving firearms as well as overseeing others in their use of firearms is, at a minimum, a base for FSC knowledge. Yet that alone, does not make the FSC. Cops who moonlight as actors or crafts persons are not qualified to work as an FSC. Actual oversight of sets where gun handling occurs is the only credentials to be accepted. Whether the FSC has all of the federal and state licenses to actually handle the firearms being used, his job is one of spotting potential safety and security issues. He has the power to stop a scene and "FREEZE" action if an actor or crafts person's health and well being is placed in jeopardy by the careless or unintentional movements of the gun. He is responsible to double-checking whether the gun's muzzle is actually pointed in a safe direction in a sot, He ensures that the weapons are secured between takes and locked up for the night after a day's shooting. He keeps track of blank cartridges on the set and makes sure that no one other than the intended actor ever takes control over the gun. A crowded, busy set or stage can play havoc on the coordination between crafts people and inadvertent actions can and have caused injury and death.
